Dogs and cats are getting fatter as loving owners give their pets too many treats and not enough exercise. Up to 40% of dogs and 33% of cats are now classified as overweight or obese. Like humans, fat pets are more likely to suffer conditions such as heart and respiratory illnesses, diabetes and arthritic problems.
Many owners associate giving treats as kindness but giving them treats all the time is extremely detrimental to their health and may eventually kill them. With many pets being left for long periods of time, owners compensate by feeding them extra treats and goodies to make themselves feel better – the humans that is. The animal then gets used to this yummy ritual and gets the puppy dog eyes, drooling and even the meowing and rubbing along the legs down to a fine art.
A much healthier alternative is to grab the lead, the ball and don on the sneakers and get them active. Not so easy with cats obviously but they love to play with moving objects such as string or feathers on a stick or draped around their cat poles. Our barking friends LOVE going for a walk and getting out of the confines of the backyard.
Dogs would prefer a romp in the park or a swim at the beach over a few liver treats any day. Not only have you made your dog happier, but you have kept those unwanted calories off – and helped burn a few too – and maybe for yourself. Half an hour a day is all it takes. So instead of a daily pig ear, liver treat or raw hide bone, cut that back to a few times a week and get active with your favourite four legged friend.
